The Get Up and Move Practice Ball
This event provides a further insight into Ballroom, a culture and community that has its origins in the Afro-American and Latin-American LGBTQIA* community. The culture was coined by Crystal Labeija, a Black-American trans* woman and Drag Mother, who called out racism within the LGBTQIA* and Drag community. By establishing a space called Ballroom, she created space and “Save Heaven” for all those marginalized people and communities that were in need of a home, shelter and family. Therefore Black and Latin American trans* women and those of Color are the pioneers of this culture and have been teaching us how to celebrate femininity in all its forms on the one hand as well as embrace ourselves and all of our identities.
Nowadays, Ballroom is an international network and community that comes together at balls to compete in different fashion, performance, and other categories.
Therefore Ballroom is a competition but at the same time it is a space for developmental progress by building your own craft and shaping your own talents, may it be fashion, performing, beauty & make-up, sexiness, designing outfits, and more.
This is going to be an event from the Leipziger Ballroom community for everybody who is interested to get to know the culture and/or has an interest in actively engaging in Ballroom in order to grow together as a community in Leipzig and East Germany.
All beginners are welcome to practice their skills on the floor while being supported by the community, friends & allies.

Ballroom intends to be an inclusive space and ALL bodies are welcome to participate, but we expect sensitivity, awareness, respect, and allyship for the community, in and outside of Ballroom.
We take a firm stance against all forms of racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia, misogyny, or any other form of discrimination.
An awareness team will be present at the event to make sure that the house rules are respected.

With this Practice Ball, we’d like to show you what a ball could look like.
The hosts, the judge, and the MC will explain some categories of the evening as well as their historical context and political meaning for the community. A ball lives by its participants on the one hand but more importantly by the energy, support, and clapping of its spectators. This is why we welcome all of you to show up, participate or just come to support your friends and the community.
There will also be workshops a day before the ball, on June 28th where you can also ask questions and learn about different categories of Ballroom, including Voguing aka Performance. Updates will follow…

Der Get Up and Move Practice Ball
Diese Veranstaltung soll einen Einblick in die Ballroom Culture geben, eine Kultur und Community, die ihren Ursprung in der afroamerikanischen und lateinamerikanischen LGBTQIA* Community hat. Daher sind Schwarze und lateinamerikanische trans* Frauen und People of Color die Pionier*innen dieser Kultur und lehren uns, Weiblichkeit in all ihren Formen zu verstehen und zu zelebrieren sowie all unsere Identitäten anzunehmen anstatt sie zu verleugnen.
Heutzutage ist Ballroom ein internationales Netzwerk und eine Community, die auf Balls zusammenkommt, um in verschiedenen Fashion-, Performance- und anderen Kategorien gegeneinander anzutreten.
